3 and a half hours by car from Tokyo, this Izu spot can be your first stop out of Tokyo, and a base to enjoy a unique region with Mount Fuji views, hot spring towns, and gorgeous beaches. The southern part of Izu is a protected natural area – a volcanic geopark with many unique features on the coastline. Some of our favorite spots are nearby, such as Shimoda – a small port town with excellent restaurants and a vibrant fishing community, and the beaches connecting it to Yumigahama and the Benzaiten cape make for excellent hiking on well-marked trails.
